It had its origins in 1883 as a quarrying town, and has since transformed itself into a resort town, serving the needs of the millions of visitors to Mount Rushmore National Memorial, which is positioned just beyond town/city limits.
According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 2.86 square miles (7.41 km2), all of it land. As of the census of 2010, there were 337 citizens , 153 homeholds, and 81 families residing in the town.
There were 230 housing units at an average density of 80.4 per square mile (31.0/km2).
There were 153 homeholds of which 23.5% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 8.5% had a female homeholder with no husband present, 5.2% had a male homeholder with no wife present, and 47.1% were non-families.
