Located in the part of the state, it is the first town/city to incorporate in the state since 1985.

Opponents of the city's dissolution insist a populace of more than a thousand, despite the formal pre-incorporation census indicating 597 residents.

The town/city is positioned west of Interstate 90, between the suburbs of Blackhawk and Piedmont, South Dakota.

The plaintiff, Casey Dolney of Summerset, can appeal the decision to the South Dakota Supreme Court. According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 2.21 square miles (5.72 km2), all land. Summerset is part of the Rapid City, South Dakota urbane area, which includes Meade and Pennington counties.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,814 citizens , 655 homeholds, and 508 families residing in the city.

Many subdivisions and master-planned communities are found in or near Summerset. It is adjoining to other urbanized areas, is served by Interstate 90 which runs through the middle of the city, and a state highway which runs alongside to the interstate highway.
